WhatsApp Expands Channel Status to More Channels on Android and iOS
WhatsApp is expanding Channel Status to more admins and channels, giving publishers and businesses a temporary way to share photos, videos and announcements that disappear after 24 hours.
WhatsApp is expanding its Channel Status feature to more channels and users on Android and iOS, giving channel admins a new way to publish short-lived content without adding permanent posts to their channel feed. The feature is being rolled out gradually, so availability still depends on whether WhatsApp has enabled it for a particular channel.
With Channel Status, admins can share temporary photos and videos that automatically disappear after 24 hours. Followers can discover these updates through the Status tray in the Updates tab, while channel statuses can also appear within the channel interface and channel information screen.
Admins can create a status directly from the Updates tab when the feature is available. WhatsApp also provides a “+” entry point within the channel interface, allowing admins to quickly open the status editor, select media and add elements such as text, stickers and other edits.
Followers can like a Channel Status and reshare it to their own WhatsApp Status, giving temporary channel content an additional distribution path.
For creators, publishers and businesses, the update creates an important distinction between permanent channel content and time-sensitive communication. Flash announcements, limited-time offers, event reminders, breaking updates, behind-the-scenes content and daily highlights can be shared without adding another permanent post to the channel timeline.
The expansion also fits into Meta’s broader strategy of making WhatsApp’s Updates tab a destination for channels, creators and businesses. Meta has previously introduced channel subscriptions, promoted channels and ads in Status as part of efforts to grow this part of WhatsApp.
Akash Takes: For WhatsApp channel owners, Channel Status could become a powerful 24-hour engagement layer. Instead of relying only on permanent posts, creators and brands can now create urgency around content that disappears. For news, marketing and community channels, that could mean more frequent touchpoints without overcrowding the main channel feed.
