Microsoft Reimagines Copilot as an AI Operating System for Work

Microsoft is giving Copilot a major upgrade, transforming it from an AI assistant into what CEO Satya Nadella describes as a “new OS for work.” The redesigned experience brings three core capabilities together: Home, Code and Autopilot. 

Home becomes the central workspace, combining Chat and Cowork while integrating Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Users can ask questions, create content, review activity and delegate more complex tasks.

Code takes AI-powered development beyond traditional programmers. Users can describe an app, dashboard, tracker or workflow in natural language, with Copilot generating the solution using technology based on GitHub Copilot. 

Then there is Autopilot—a persistent AI agent designed to continue working even when the user is away. It can operate within Microsoft 365 and use organizational context and tools under defined controls. 

For marketers and businesses, this could mean fewer disconnected AI tools and more workflows managed from a single environment. Instead of simply generating content, AI is increasingly moving toward building, delegating and executing work.

Microsoft says Home and Code will begin rolling out through its Frontier program, while Autopilot is expanding to private preview.
