Google has introduced Skills in the Gemini app, giving users a new way to turn frequently repeated instructions into reusable AI workflows.
Instead of explaining the same process every time, users can create a Skill that contains specific instructions for how Gemini should complete a task. Skills can be used for activities such as preparing presentations, adapting content to a particular writing style or following a repeatable workflow.
Once created, a Skill can be activated by typing “/” followed by its name inside the Gemini app. Users can also combine multiple Skills, allowing more complex workflows to be built from smaller reusable instructions.
Skills can work with files such as PDFs and images, potentially making them useful for workflows that require Gemini to follow a specific process while working with user-provided material.
Google says Skills are rolling out globally for personal accounts. Support for Google Workspace is expected to arrive later, which could make the feature particularly relevant for professional and business workflows.
Skills also replace Google’s earlier Gems approach. Existing Gems are expected to migrate to Skills automatically, with the transition taking place over time and the previous system being phased out by mid-2027 depending on the account type.
The change reflects a broader movement toward customizable AI workflows. Rather than treating AI as a blank chat window for every task, users can build reusable instructions that standardize how recurring work gets completed.
For marketers, creators and businesses, this could be especially useful for maintaining consistent content formats, campaign processes, reporting structures and brand guidelines.
Akash Takes: Skills could make Gemini much more useful for repeatable work. The real advantage isn’t just saving a prompt—it’s turning your best instructions into reusable building blocks that can be combined into larger AI workflows. For marketers and automation professionals, that’s a step closer to building a personal AI operating system.
