OpenAI is introducing a new visual advertising format for ChatGPT, with initial testing planned for later this month in the United States. The ads will appear alongside images users generate in ChatGPT and will feature products and services from an initial group of advertisers.
The format gives advertisers a more visual way to communicate with consumers, potentially showing products, inspiration or experiences relevant to what users are exploring. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled and kept separate from AI-generated images, while advertising will not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
The company is also expanding its advertising measurement ecosystem with click-attribution partners and full-funnel measurement providers. It is developing brand-suitability tools with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers understand where their ads appear.
For marketers, this could mark an important shift from traditional search and social advertising toward AI-native advertising, where users discover products during conversational and visual journeys.
With ChatGPT reaching around 1.2 billion weekly users, OpenAI is positioning the platform as a major new advertising environment.
