X is introducing X Numbers, a new optional feature designed to make private communication easier without requiring users to follow each other.
With X Numbers, users receive an eight-digit private code that they can share with someone they want to connect with. Entering the code provides direct access to encrypted XChat messages or calls, even when inboxes are closed or follows are not mutual.
According to X’s head of design, Benji Taylor, the feature offers a new way for people to connect without going through traditional message requests. Users also retain control over their code and can refresh or disable it whenever they want.
Importantly, X Numbers does not require a subscription and works alongside X’s existing messaging features. It also provides an alternative to sharing a phone number when someone wants to establish a private communication channel.
